The Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulating Boards (AMFTRB) is an officially recognized organization that promotes the regulatory and certification bodies for MFTs in each state. All states (except California*) need individuals seeking to become MFTs to pass the National MFT Exam to earn their clinical license. The AMFTRB not only conducts the MFT licensure exam but also carries out and disseminates the most recent clinical treatment research, assists in drafting and influencing national and state mental health regulations, and provides its users with all relevant information. However, all significant choices that may impact the field of marriage and family therapy are supported, guided, and advised by the AMFTRB.
The mission of AMFTRB is to assist each state in safeguarding the public from unlicensed therapists. The AMFTRB has created a test that can be used to determine whether a licensee has the training, experience, and expertise necessary to assist persons in need of mental and behavioral health support. This is because anyone holding a license must have these qualifications. The ability to pass this exam demonstrates to your state regulatory board that you are a trained and competent therapist prepared to engage in clinical treatment.
The AMFTRB National MFT Exam is a computer-based standardized test. There are 180 multiple-choice questions in the trial. To finish the exam questions, test-takers have four hours. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, those who fit the requirements can ask for special accommodations. Additionally, several states offer unique accommodations for English language learners. The National MFT Exam's passing score is determined by a panel of distinguished judges and will vary with each exam testing period.
Each state that accepts the AMFTRB National MFT Exam for licensure will have different eligibility requirements for taking the exam. You must contact your state's licensing board to apply and learn about eligibility requirements. When your state licensing board grants you permission to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam, you will receive an approval letter with an approval code and a link to the PTC Online Application System. Once you have been given the go-ahead, finish the PTC application and send in the exam/testing fee money.
You can pay a one-time transfer fee of $165 to change the date of your MFT exam. You will be required to pay the entire registration fee of $355 if you book your exam again. The number of times you can retake the National AMFTRB Exam if you fail it will depend on the policies of your state board. The AMFTRB does let you retake the exam up to three (3) times in a 12-month span.
